Hi everyone (possibly just Lynn),
I'm sorry for what was up here before and how long it took me to get rid of it - Lynn, I got your message at Maeve's but not until today when I was looking through the archives. Good thing it landed around finale time or I wouldn't have looked through them. Anyways, I apologize to anyone who had to be bothered by that (hope you didn't click it! The link seemed to explain enough to me!) I've been really busy trying to get a levy passed on the third try for our school district (it passed last night by 52.24%. The no group is now trying to petition to put it back up for defeat). I should be less busy from now on (with the exception of this weekend - I will be gone for the fanfest for 4 days). Thanks for being patient with me, guys.

Algebra practice Exit Test... I'm not entirely sure what the concept is. -- KatieS, 19:37:22 03/11/03 Tue (pleiades-30.cmh.jadeinc.net/209.57.24.230)
Okay, so we are going back over our practice exit tests tonight, and I'm totally not getting this one. The problem is this:
-1(3y-2(y+1))+11=20
I'm not sure how you're supposed to do this problem, in what order. I tried several ways... I tried doing 2(y+1) by the distributive property first, and then I did -1(3y-2y-2) and combined like terms to get -y+2+11 and then -y+13, but then you do
-y+13=20
-13 -13
-y=-7
y=7
But the answer is really y=-29. I've got NO CLUE how to get there.
Somebody, PLEASE help!
Thanks,
Katie

Ok I need help with four problems.
1. An equilateral triangle has a radius of 4 m. Find the perimeter and area. This one I started and will put inside...
For 2-4... Regular polygons A and B are similar. Compare their areas. (I have NO Clue how to do this...)
2. The radius of square A is twice the radius of square B.
3.The length of a side of hexagon A equals the radius of hexagon B.
4. The perimeter of decagon A equals the length of a side of decagon B.
For the last three can you help me figure out how to do these?? It's awful I tried so hard. The first one is inside - I'll let you take a look at my work and tell me what I did wrong. I'll just write it in the form of reasoning since I can't draw my shapes.
Thanks!

- Thanks so much for being here when I need you, you're the best. You always help me sooo much!! :) And geometry is evil. LOL. I actually MISS algebra. I speak the word with longing! LOLOLOL! Anyways thanks sooo much for your help!! (NT) -- KatieS who is actually doing really good in geometry despite all her troubles, 20:53:07 02/07/05 Mon
- Thanks! I hope I didn't log on too late to be of help to you. What math course will you be taking next year? Do you have a career in mind and is anyone helping you take courses that will help with that? Have a great weekend. (NT) -- LynnBo, 17:24:51 02/11/05 Fri
- Hey Lynn, next year I'll most likely be taking PreCal, woo hoo (not) although I've heard it's more like algebra than geometry so I'll be okay I think. Anyways I'm either going to teach middle school social studies/language arts or elementary school so math wont be the biggest thing ever, hopefully, but I'm still hoping to take Calculus in my senior year for college credit. (NT) -- KatieS, 22:40:54 02/13/05 Sun
- You're right that PreCal is more like algebra, but it also has trigonometry in it (at a more in-depth level than what you've probably had in Geometry.) If you teach middle school soc.st. or lang. arts, you will have very little math to take. Elementary education majors take quite a bit of math, but it is geared towards helping you better understand the basics so that you can be a proficient teacher for your students. Either route you go, you will have no troubles! My school has a Future Educators of America club, does yours? If so, JOIN! There are other courses, such as sociology, that are helpful. Write to your local universities and find out what they recommend you take. The more you take in high school for free, the less you'll have to pay to take in college! (NT) -- LynnBo, 17:54:55 02/14/05 Mon
- It's actually really sad... see inside it was too long. -- KatieS, 21:07:51 02/19/05 Sat
- INCREDIBLE! Kentucky always gets a bad rep for education, but I see other states having just as much, and in your case, more trouble than us. My largest class this semester only has 20 students! Most of our AP classes have just 10-20 students! Our clubs are sponsored by volunteer faculty sponsors, although field trips and competitions are funded by the district. I hope the levy passes this time, after all the people voting it down will suffer in the future when they will be the aged depending on uneducated citizens who will be running the economy then! (NT) -- LynnBo, 13:08:54 02/20/05 Sun
- LOL we know it's the people in nursing homes and such that are voting us down, my friend Erica is so cynical, she said "We'll pay them back when we work those nursing homes" it was so funny. No but seriously it has been crazy... you should see all the editorials in the paper... people are like, we said no twice, we'll say it again, and others are like, HELLO THESE ARE OUR KIDS! Honestly. Who paid for your education? It's a cycle people, we'll be paying someday too! Sigh. Governor Taft is the biggest idiot on this earth. I really do hope we get it passed, we'll be working really hard. Spanish I think was an A, English too, Health was an A, Chemistry C+ (that was my lowest I'm horrible at Chemistry), Geometry A (woohoo!), Weight training 100%!! and I already put my history. Soooo yay!
I took a geometry test today that I know I messed up on, I put the angle of depression in the wrong place, the angle of elevation, all that. I hope I didn't do too bad on it.
That's all just checking in. Later.

- I have alot of difficulty in math, probably because there's so much need to be precise, and I have trouble with being precise when multiplying, adding, etc over and over again - and because there are so many processes to memorize. (NT) -- KatieS, 20:22:13 11/23/03 Sun
- I have a hard time with math too. It just doesn't make sense to me like languages and history does. When I took it, I would spend hours studying but it would never click in my head and I could never duplicate what the teacher taught us when I'd go home and do the assigned work. So I stopped taking math after grade 12 (we only had to take it up til grade 10, so I held out way longer than I should have!!). (NT) -- Heather K, 18:31:19 11/24/03 Mon
- Me three. I have trouble with it because I never was made to learn the basics. I was very brilliant in other areas, and so I was always being pulled out of class to go off to tutor other kids, or go to some gifted kid lecture, or something. It took me many long years of remediation to even learn the basics. I guess that old saying about the older you get, the dumber you get is true-I think I am about to fail Intermediate Algebra. Oh, well. There's always next semester! (NT) -- Mama CAss, 00:21:23 11/27/03 Thu
- And actually, it's not quite so bad. We are doing simple stuff (sets of numbers) and Simple Interest stuff (which comes easy for me-hmm. Hi everyone,
I know this place has been quiet lately, but I did some running through of the contents of the board this evening and noticed some posts that definitely should not have been here. I have deleted the offensive posts and I ask everyone to please let me know (through the email the moderator feature at the top of the main board) if you should find anything you conisider offensive so that I may review it. I'm very sorry that those ones were there for so long and if they offended anyone I'm so sorry. I don't go through the entire board very often.
Now to new posters.
I have noticed a number of new posters posting their questions under posts from other people that could be quite old. Most people don't read all the way down the board every day, so you will be more likely to get your question answered if you post it as a new message. To do this, click the "Post New Message" link at the top of the main board, or scroll all the way down to the bottom of the main board and use the form there. When you post replies, they should be about another person's post, not about an unrelated topic, or they may never get looked at. Just some words of advice, I hope everyone can use this board this year!

Prove that a quick way tp square a whole number ending in frive is to place 25 after the product of the number formed by the digits preceding the five and the next integer. For example, 65 X 65 (65 squared)= 4225 (6 X 7 [the next integer]=42, then tack on 25) and 125 x 125 (125 squared) = 15,625 (12 X 13 [the next integer]=156, then tack on 25)

Linear programming and word problems... -- KatieS, 16:30:40 11/23/03 Sun (pleiades-25.cmh.jadeinc.net/209.57.24.225)
I have several problems in my algebra homework that - I understand the process, but it doesn't seem like I'm getting enough information to solve. I can solve them when they are set up, but I need some help getting the information out of the word problems…
Here they are:
1. In a zoo, there is a natural habitat containing several feeding areas. One of these areas serves as a feeding area for two species, I and II, and it is supplied each day with 120 pounds of food A, 110 pounds of food B, and 57 pounds of food C. Each individual of species I requires 5 lb of A, 5 lb of B, and 2 lb of C, and each individual of species II requires 6 lb of A, 4 lb of B, and 3 lb of C. Find the maximum number of these species that can be supported.
Okay so I have to get equations out of that to solve in linear systems by graphing… but then I have to get the test point out of there and I don't know what that would be??
2. A candidate wishes to use a combination of radio and television advertisements in his campaign. Research has shown that each one minute spot on television reaches .09 million people and each one minutes spot on the radio reaches .006 million people. The candidate feels he must reach at least 2.16 million people, and he must buy a total of at least eighty minutes of advertisements. How many minutes of each medium should be used to minimize costs if television costs $500/minute and radio costs $100/minute?
x+y (> or =) 80
.09x+.006y (> or =) 2.16
But then what would the other equation be to find the minimum? Is it 500x+100y= something?
3. A bank has two types of branches. A satellite branch employs three people, requires $100,000 to construct and open, and generates an average daily revenue of $10,000. A full service branch employs six people, requires $140,000 to construct and open, and generates an average daily revenue of $18,000. The bank has up to $2.98 million avaliable to open new branches, and has decided to limit the new branches to a maximum of twentyfive. If the bank further decides to hire at most 120 new employees, how many branches of each type should the bank open in order to maximize the average daily revenues?
Here, I can't even figure out how to define my variables. Should they be number of branches, people, money? I need help with that and then figuring out which pieces of information go where in each problem - I should be able to figure this out but without defining my variables I can't!
Thank you for any help you can give - if I can't understand it from here I'll get help tomorrow from the teacher.
~Katie
