The problem with that was that she really truly believed that he was such a good man, and he didn't feel it and he figured that her mother - she just sounded so knowing - would see him for what he really was. He did try to do right by Emily these days - he really tried hard - but he was pretty sure, because all of his mistakes that he had made in his life, he wasn't quite in a place to be classified as a 'good man' just yet. "Do you have any regrets, Emily? About how things have turned out?" He just wanted to make her as happy as she could be and he never wanted her to feel like she was a 'bad, sinful girl' like her parents seemed to think she was.
