Subject: Can someone help a lost fan?

I'm an old Andromeda fan who tried mightily to watch it during the first and second seasons. The local Fox station started moving it around so chaotically in the schedule that I eventually had to give up. I haven't seen a show since the middle of 2nd season.

I heard on the Slipstream board that the writing subsequently went way downhill, and key characters left. This made me sad, but I had no clue how to watch it.

I ended up thinking, "well, the original Star Trek had only two good years, also." And Andromeda really reminds me of the original Star Trek: it doesn't pretend to have the best production values, but it presents a broad cast who personify different elements of the single human persona (except Andromeda does both geneders, while ST only did men). With sharp, humorous writing.

Recently buying Season 1 on DVD reinforced my deep affection for the show.

Now, I've accidently caught a new episode on TV, and everthing is different! Rommie is apparently dead (or mostly dead), Tyr is gone, Rev Bem is gone, and the crew seems to be no more united than they were at the beginning of season 1.

In short, I feel like I've been in a wormhole.

But the show I just saw -- surprise, surprise -- moved me nearly as much as a season 1 show. It was Doyle returning to the ship, realizing she's a warship. It was relatively good stuff. Not the degenerated crap I'd been told to fear.

So here's my question: What's the Conventional Wisdom? Did the show really go to hell? If so, can someone tell me precisly HOW it sucked? And did it get better again, or does it still suffer in comparison with Season 1?

Thank you for reading and helping...
