As for your first question I'm not sure, all I know is that Zack and Ash are leaving and that will be the last of the veteran Andromeda writers. From what I understand they wanted to go a different way with the show instead of having long story lines that only the hardcore fans like us loved they wanted to be more Star Trek like and have each episode as stand alone so the average viewer could understand it. This meant alot of hardcore fans were going to be pissed, but they probably picked up more casual viewers and thats where the ratings come from.
I don't think season 3 sucked there were a few good episodes (Cui Bono, Point of the Spear, and so forth) but they definaty made a big change at the begining of the season instead of making it gradualy and I think thats what pissed everyone off not to mention half the veteran writers left near the begining of the season. Anyways thats just my thoughts on the subject.

BTW Just saw "Point of the Spear" it was pretty good for a heavy CGI/action episode, I liked it. One of the better episodes this season I think.
