Before i married, i enjoyed several hiking trips to colorado and california by bus, which uses significantly less fuel the jet travel, and also experienced many cities and people in between. I miss those 2 - 3 week camping trips with a slow ride across the country now, but a week in new hampshire's white mountains or the adirondacks isn't bad, and i burn less fuel while travelling then most americans burn commuting to work in a gas guzzler for the equivalent time span. When i started working, i didn't have the time to take the bus, so i flew. these days, flying is such a hassel i would recommend the bus anyway, even if it is a few days.
