Actually Silver Nitrate reacts to chlorides not "salt water" as such anything containing chlorides will cause a reaction. Almost everything organic contains chlorides so a positive reaction will occur. Seawater contains chlorides so of course you will get a positive reaction.

What is it you are trying to test for???
