In reply to: JMHO 's message, "Irish Dance has a problem just as big as the cheating. The use & abuse of dancers to promote dance schools and culture without pay. Aside from developing confidence for a select few, there is no inherent benefit for dancers to perform unpaid. Looking back at over 15 years of parades and performances and the month of March it now seems like abuse." on 16:55:16 03/15/24 Fri

So do you have friends in club soccer? Do they get paid to play their games?

So our regular fee is $300 for an hour show at a private function (shows that are free to the community we don’t charge for). Once $$ is taken out for maintaining or updating the portable sound system and mp3 player, giving gas money to the carpools, maintaining and adding to the show costumes and props… you’d maybe get $2 per dancer.

As far as our school, we count shows as a class. Our teacher spends time preparing us, then also spends admin time arranging the performing opportunities for us. Once we are there we’re learning about quick shoe changes, paying attention to the progress of the show, warming up in unideal situations, performing and emoting for an audience, and being able to do our steps well on any surface we’re given. No falls at feis for us! Everyone comes out of a St. Patrick’s day season so much better at their dances because they’re tried and tested under pressure and repetition as our max effort.

If you don’t want to perform, don’t. No one is making you. If your opportunity cost is too high, pass.
