I know so many retired dancers who felt pushed out of competitive Irish dancing because they didn't have anywhere to go. Once you reach your late 20s/early 30s, you're either going against dancers 10 years younger than you, or you have to forever relegate yourself to the dead-end adult categories that offer no progression or world qualifying opportunity.

And then the problem with adult competitions is you still have massive age disparities. Dancers just 18 years old are going against dancers in their 30s and 40s and older. If you actually talk to adult dancers, you'll hear far and away the biggest complaint is that they have to dance against dancers much older or much younger than they are. They don't care if you've danced as a youth or placed in a youth prelim. The age groups are what matter. Younger dancers get to go against other dancers their age and that's all adults want.
