Adding to the confusion, the syllabus defines the “regular“ Adults as dancers 18 or older who have not competed during the previous five years, except as an Adult level dancer. But dancers who are technically “advanced adults” may also fall under the definition of “Adults” as written, because the “advanced adult” definition does not appear to require a dancer who falls under it to move into that category and out of regular adult Adult category, despite the fact that that was likely the intention. If indeed this is what was intended , the rule needs to make that much more clear, because as the interest in the adult level competitions grows, you will have people who are qualified to be in advanced adults competing in regular adults at a big competition like NANs in the hope of placing well over adults with much less experience.

Even assuming moving up is mandatory for those meeting the “Advanced adult” requirements, the recent decision to allow dancers to move from an Open Champ/& over category immediately into advanced adults without a 5 year wait seems to eviscerate the reasoning behind creating the adult level competition in the first place. How is it right that a dancer can WQ at Oireachtas or NANs one year and then six months later be competing against a 50 year old who may have won one third in prelim as a 12 year old? I know it’s appealing to an older champ dancer who wants to make the switch but doesn’t want to take a 5 year break, but moving directly into a category as all encompassing as “Advanced Adults” does not seem to be the answer. Perhaps tighter age groups need to be added to fairly address this group, ie, adults under 30 or 35?

Also a thought: if you do not meet the definition of an “Advanced Adult” as written (and because it addresses only what a dancer did as a youth competitor, they will never meet the advanced adult definition), can a dancer who regularly wins adult championships at current feisanna stay in regular adults indefinitely? From the definition, it seems they could, although that clearly would undermine the reason for having split the group, and would be unfair to many other dancers.

Just some things to think about. I certainly don’t have the answers, but I think more narrow age groups will help. Thats an additional discussion.
