The way the rule is written now, a 50 year old who may have placed 3rd in prelim when they were 8 must compete in Advanced Adults. They cannot compete in Adults. That’s why the rule is crazy - it doesn’t appropriately or realistically match the level dancers may be at. Which is why having age groups would make a lot of sense.
