First of all, shame on you for shaming other adults. Do YOU not have a hobby, sport or passion of your own? What do you say to the professional football players still hanging out with the kids on the field on Sunday night football? What about the professional Ballerinas at age 40? Or how about those Gymnasts everyone loves to watch at the Olympics???? The hypocrisy of a lot of you KILLS me. This is a sport where we win no accolades, money, or sponsorship. We pay our own way just like everyone else. So what if we want to keep competing?

For me, I felt unfinished as a kid. I had to change dance schools so many times, I felt that my potential was never tapped right. I came back in my mid twenties ans finally made Opens at 25, and finally recalled at Oireachtas in senior ladies at 27, and recalled at nans in senior ladies at 29. And now I’ve kept going because I do truly love to challenge myself. I don’t win, I don’t come close to winning. But I love pushing myself to be better as a dancer and athlete. I enjoy competing in these silly little dance things as much as runners love to go to marathons or iron man’s or those mud runs. It’s just literally a rose by any other name.

The doors to shows were never open to me. I was a kid from south, we didn’t have auditions close to me, and I was never good enough to get in. I was a non placing prelim when I was forced to retire at 18. 15 years ago, we didn’t have the opportunities your kids have now. Even performing now locally isn’t a thing. We get stuff around St Patrick’s day, but we don’t have an Irish pub on every corner like New York or Boston.

I am a 30+ person with a real full time job that I love. I recently got married and want a family, touring is not ideal. Getting my TCRG is not out of question, but I don’t feel done competing quite yet. Also they are some of the MOST expensive exams and we have to pay out of pocket for all the expenses related to that.

And as for wigs and make up etc. It’s part of this sport? You think we enjoy wearing tights? Or having to tan? Or wigs that pull our hair out? Paying thousands or dollars for a dress? I’m 100% positive we feel the same way your kids does about all these things. BUT ITS THE REQUIREMENT OF THE SPORT. So yeah, we do enjoy to an extent putting all that on. Same way a ballerina puts on her oversized tutus, or the gymnast their leotard. Because if you don’t wear the costume the judges will have bias against you; and they will because I’ve had friends not win because judges admitted the didn’t place high enough because they were not in full costume.

So how about you go worry about your own life and your own kid. My parents don’t pay for me, and only come the majors they want to participate in. You don’t have to participate when your kid is 30. But don’t bash us for our joy of the sport.
