Subject: years ago, one of the teachers in our school tried to do this.
In reply to: ???? 's message, "Is it true some teachers don't allow dancers to be friends with dancers from other schools?" on 21:30:10 07/24/24 Wed

I responded that NO ONE would be telling me who I was "allowed" to be friends with. I pointed out that that was WAY beyond their reach to even imply. Also pointed out that we had made treasured friends through the years at competitions and considered that one of the most lovely parts about Irish Dancing and I had no intention of changing my behavior regarding that.

We continued to openly socialize with all our feis friends, and made no secret about the fact that we often shared a hotel room with close friends who attend a different school. Some teachers think they own you. If you are smart, you will push back when they are ridiculous. I guess there is a risk...but if they are going to be that stupid, then I was willing to take the chance.

No one ever said anything more to us about it. They knew they didn't have a leg to stand on. The other teacher at our school thought it was a stupid statement (from 2nd teacher).

Worked out for us.

  • I will say this, most inter-school friendships are on the up and up, but it only takes one bad apple for a teacher to get cautious. We had a pseudo-adult dancer who chose to leave on bad terms (wasn't allowed to be a queen bee) and they trashed and undermined the former teachers to their groupie "friends". -- BTDT, 08:37:55 08/04/24 Sun
  • I guess I don't see what this has to do with having friends outside the school?? -- ??, 16:40:51 08/04/24 Sun
