Subject: Every program/school is different. My kids went to an Arts Magnet High school and I assure you that the same level of commitment was expected for arts as sports.
In reply to: either ID or sports 's message, "Theatre and dance requirements at school are ENTIRELY different than sports expectations" on 14:48:56 09/02/24 Mon

IT was a public high school with are Arts program. Theater productions required 100% commitment with rehearsal 5 afternoons a week. For Sports, in varied depending on the sport. Team sports... you had to be at all practices... things like track or swimming was somewhat more flexible, which makes perfect sense.

My dancer did school activities and dance... but she was not a top top level dancer. We were very involved and committed to dance, but didn't have the pressure of being expected to make the podium at worlds. That would be very hard.

Here is the bitter truth folks. VERY FEW of our kids are ever going to stand on the Podium at Worlds. Make sure your kid isn't "giving up everything else in their pursuit of a World medal" when realistically they are going to be 36th at the Oireachtas. If they want to "give up everything else" to dance, because they LOVE IT and it makes them HAPPY... then go for it. Make sure you are being realistic. On the flip side, if your dancer has the goal of "qualifying for Worlds" (even though their chance of recall is slim) that is 100% FINE. My daughter wanted that...and got there a couple of times. She has no regrets about the commitments she made to get there. She was realistic about her position in the pecking order, proud of her achievements and growth... (moved way up in the standings on her 2nd trip to worlds - still not in recall). WE made the best of the trips and had a good time. She is a good dancer, at very good teacher and and a talented choreographer. Set your own goals and don't let others tell you what is important to you.

Everyone needs to make the commitment that makes sense to them. Every situation is different. I know people that did dance and sports and theater and were good at all of them. Also know kids that committed completely to one thing and never hit the top level there. Do what you love to do, as much as you can. Life is short and opportunities change.
