The last couple of times I’ve flown (on different airlines) they have been pretty strict about what you bring on the plane: one carry on for the overhead compartment, one personal item that fits under your seat, and no additional item like a purse or laptop sleeve.

If we aren’t checking bags, my dancer brings a carry on with her clothes etc and some of my clothes etc. Her personal bag for under seat is her dance bag with as much dance stuff as possible and still squish under the seat.

My personal item is a backpack with the rest of my stuff. My carry on luggage is the dress bag with any additional dance stuff that didn’t fit in the dance bag. Before we board, I put my purse in the dance bag. On the plane, I hang the dress up with the garment bags and take my purse out to keep with me. The fight attendants don’t care as long as you are kind to them.

Packing light is key. You need fresh underwear and socks every day, but you can wear the same shirt two days and the same pants two or three days. You don’t need 5 sweatshirts for a 3-night trip. One sweatshirt or jacket is sufficient. No one is judging what you are wearing. And if they are, that is not someone whose opinion you should care about.

For dance stuff, if you think about it, it isn’t that much stuff besides the dress. Two pairs of shoes, socks, leg tan, wig, donuts, Bobby pins, hair binders, hairspray, hairpiece, bloomers, makeup.

For teenagers, it is important to set down clear expectations for what they can bring. They don’t have the brain development to know what they should bring and tend to want to bring things “just in case.” Never pack anything because you “might” need it.
