Part of the Spiegel Dossier on Colonia Dignidad (unfortunately, only available in German and for fee), there is an interview with a German and a Chilenan boy who were both members of the cult and became frieds. Both were molested by the cult leader, like many other boys (he had only interest in young boys, not in girls or women). Nearly all cult members knew this, but dared to say anything. The interview is from 1997. Here is an interesting passage:
Translation:
SPIEGEL: How does the cult leader control 300 people?
Müller [ex member]: He does this using religion. Nobody is allowed to commit a sin, you have to confess everything publicly. In the last time, meetings took place every evening from 11pm to 2am. If you are tired, you can be pushed to confess sins more easily. Sometimes, Schäfer makes up accusations, for instance that boys are doing dirty things. Or he interprets a verse from the Bible. With this he fascinates the listeners, he knows the Bible almost completely by heart. Some compare him with Jesus. He disclaims this, but in reality, he likes to hear it.
Sounds familiar.
