The division between original ubf and reform seemed to be a division of between the North of the country and the South.

Kaleb Hong depicted it as a division between the headquarters and the rest (and with "headquarters" he meant solely the national headquarters, which is Seoul in Korea and Chicago in America). And there was some truth in this ovservation. Kaleb Hong wrongly interpreted this of course as a sign of inferiority or third-rateness of the reform movement.

It might appear as a split between North and South because Seoul is located in the North (of South Korea), and it is probably that chapters closer to Seoul would sympathize with the hardliners and the more remote chapters would sympathize with the reformers.

I know that Taegu is a huge modern city meanwhile. Nevertheless, Seoul is the political center and is considered the UBF headquarters in Korea.

Please also read Lee's message here where he said:

"Before coming up to Seoul, I pioneered Chun Ju and Tae Jeon and served many students from many provinces. In 1967 Mother Barry and I went up to Seoul to make UBF nationwide."

You see how important Seoul is for them.

Lee seems to have been attrated by everything that had to do with power, like the capitol city. And I personally believe that he went to the USA because he was attracted by its image as a super power nation.
