Subject: Terrorism

This might be a bit of topic, but is still interesting.
Some time ago we had a discussion about terrorism and why Muslims did not seem to condemn it in the media as much as some people thought they should.
A book of poetry has just been published in English in Saudi Arabia by a young woman (writing mainly about womens affaires) She is called Nimah Ismail Nammab (no she's not a Methodist) One of her brilliant poems concerns the Al Qaeda attack on a housing compound for foreign workers in the Saudi Capital Riyadh in May 2003 which killed 30 people.
I will copy it here. Its truly worth reading

THE BLACKEST NIGHT.

The blackest, blackest night descended
On the land of the praying palm trees.

The gaurdian Kingdom
lies open and bare.

With its shattered peace, shattered innocence
In the wake of rancorous explosions.

Fair is foul, and foul is fair,
The world lies on its hinges,
Askew.

Right is wrong and wrong is right,
The wicked work of blind messengers of death,
Rocked the nation, rolled the nations.

Dark deed done in the darkness of night,
Under the hate hovering cloud
Of fanaticicism, utter ruthlessness,
Of hatred for the other.

Future generations
Will bear the stigma
Of weapons used to vanquish the unarmed.

Of innocent people from all creeds,
Lives torn assunder, A blemish shared by all.

No oceans will cleanse the stain
Remembered with loathing by all.

The blackest, blackest night,
Soaked in the blood of innocents.

As demented lethal minds,
Planned and went about their unholy work.

Cloaking their viperish, venomous deed,
In the name of a peaceful religion.

Carrying out the mission of death,
Death of the Muslim mandated tolerance,
Death of historic ties with the People of the Book,
Death of illustrious Islamic honour,
Death of long held values,
Death of the essence of their faith.

Attempting to shake the very name
The venerated spirit of Salam of peace.

The peaceful in Islam
Ripped out of the word
Ripped out of their merciful faith.

A molten lava of bitterness,
Spewing forth resentment,
Sowing the seeds of anarchy.

Fanaticism rearing its ugly head,
Brazenly flouting the very principals Islam epouses
Of equality in the eyes of the One.

Dealing the death blow to their pious calling,
Exposing their warped thinking to the world.

Their people, their land refute them,
Consigning them and their arcane act to the Devil.

Will the bleakest night ever be forgotten.

This is the work of a young Saudi woman who has I am sure you will agree truly excellent English which she uses with great insight. Women poets here are very, very, rare
