Tony, I was aware that this was not the point of your posting which I appreciated and to which I had nothing to add or comment.

Nevertheless it turned out to be a crucial issue in our overall discussion of UBF and cults, so I think it is worthwile asking that question. I believe the criticism of the term "brainwashing" is just a red herring used by cult apologists. I just would like to know how UBF members would call the things that happened to the members of Heavens's Gate, Aum, Jonestown, Moon cult, Branch Davidians etc. etc.

Mike, just as an aside to your posting: The usually acid-tongued atheistical German Spiegel magazine published an article last week discussing the question whether science and faith in God would be contradictory.

They interviewed the French philosopher Jean Guitton, member of the famous Acadmie franaise and quoted him saying the following:

"Wer nicht besonders viel wei, ist oft berzeugt, dass die Wissenschaft die Religion widerlegt. Wer hingegen wirklich viel wei, der sieht, dass er sich mit jedem weiteren Schritt einer Konzeption nhert, die der der Religion entspricht."

Translated: "Those who don't have a substantial knowledge are often convinced that science disproves religion. But those who really have knowledge recognize that every step leads them further towards a conception that is equivalent to religion."
