I think Mike is right, you can take the statement at face value, but there is a deception wrapped up in this face value statement. Brain is trying to say that doctrine is not very important simply because people debate and often do not agree upon many details. So Brain is using the inevitable debating over doctrine to stifle any discussion aboutubf doctrine.
After all, this whole thread is about doctrine. Is it a coincidence that Brain summed up his whole spiel with a blanket statement that is is 'foolish' to argue over doctrine? The more we spend time and energy debating ubf doctrine, the more we will expose it as unsound and unBiblical. So to Brain, a defender of all of ubf practices and teachings, the best recourse is that nobody discuss doctrine ever.
People who have left ubf need to see why ubf doctrine is so unBiblical. I hope that people can learn about sound doctrine, and see that ubf is built on unsound doctrine. The most effective way to help people to reject ubf is to expose it as unsoud in doctrine, as being not from the Bible. One friend has said that if ubf can be fully exposed as unsound, that the ubf will be demolished. The ubf thrived and grew with unsound.
