But I don't think criticizing what has happened in the past is going to get us anywhere.

Unfortuntely, the opposite is the case.

Those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it.

The Bible is full of stories from the past. About a third of the OT is made of "historical books." The Bible even speaks about personal failures of individual people. Not only of those people like Saul who failed, but also failures of great people like Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, David, Peter and many others. Why do you think the Bible mentions these problems? Why does it mention the failures of the religious "systems" of the past, like the religious system of the Pharisees?

It is of utmost importance that we learn from history, including church history. I am fully convinced of the truth behind the sentence "Those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it."

Even if UBF has completely changed, and is better now, this change should be analyzed and documented so future generations do not make the same mistakes again.

Concerning the verse "Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead," it is a complete misunderstanding if you quote it in order to justify ignoring history and mistakes of the past. Please read the context of Phil 3. The verse speaks about not dwelling in your "achievements" of the past.

It is also true that when a person sinned in a way that only affects God and the person, and the person repents, God will completely forget. But if the sin affects other persons, an apology and if possible, compensation is required (see Amy's example of Zacheus). And if the system stems from a sinful "system" of doctrines or practices, the system needs to be changed. And of course, the repentance must be sincere and all possible measures taken that it does not happen again. This includes to not forget these "systemic" problems, but to warn future generations about these problems. I cannot see anything of this in the case of UBF.
