The problem with cults is that they often give certain practices and believes a label that is a complete misfit, often the opposite of what is really is, but members who are not accustomed to think deeply, tend to believe these things are indeed what they are called.

This is the case with the expressions "by faith" and "for the glory of God". What is called "by faith" is often either magical thinking or own effort or blind obedience. And what is called for the "glory of God" is always "for the glory of UBF" (however in UBF, this makes no difference, since UBF is considered to be God's ministry).

The fixation on grades is only a sub-phenomenon of the general fixation on human honor and the Confucianistic worldview in UBF. I believe the most fundamental underlying motivation in UBF is getting honor and being elite. This can be seen everywhere, including in the "get all A's" paradigm. I think it is a very bad paradigm. First, as you said either it is performance-based (if you believe you can do it) or it is presumptuous (if you believe God has to do it). I mentioned the problem of "examination by faith" in the context of "marriage by faith" (see here, in the first paragraphs).
