Mayria turned to the sound of her name, one leg in its divided skirt on the horse, the other in midair. She saw that it was only roll call, and finished mounting, sitting properly sidesaddle. Her legs pressed against the warm horseflesh, and she gave a mild kick, reminding the horse gently that she was mounted and he needed to stop grazing. The black gelding shook his head, dancing eagerly, and Mayria brought him under control with a tug on the reins.

The horse was used to channelling, since his stall was where Mayria snuck off to to practice clandestinely. The Gateway did not startle him one bit. Mayria got into the line to go through just before Kayla and just after Leo, and wondered if the cold feeling she felt on the back of her neck was the wind or the other girl's stare.

Rearranging the wide-brimmed hat, Mayria decided it was the wind, and kept her eyes studiously forward.
