I have no problem with the term personally. Just another word for "game", "outcome", "contest", etc.

But I see your point.

It's kinda like when they say "the score is 55-45. The team is now within 10.". They are not within 10, because that would be less than 10. No, they are losing by exactly 10. More than 9.99999999999999, but less than 10.0000000000001. If the team that is not in the lead has another free throw made, they'd be within 10 because they'd be down by 9. Or behind by 9.
