I was wondering, Shannon, what your opinion is of tying soft shoes around arch. My daughters teacher wants them that way and I have heard conflicting opinions. She doesn't practice in them so it is only at feis.
Also my daughter is absolutly addicted to elastics for her hard shoes.. They also look tight around her arch. She does practice in them 1/2 hr a dy with the elastics. (God forbid we can't find them) LOL Thanks

I recently found out i have a herniated disk in my spine... i am not sure whether it is in my neck or further down. I have to see my dr. on thurs. however, i wantedto know if anyone ever had this problem? supposedly it is most commen in adults 30-55 or something but i am not even close to 30!!
anyway, i may or may not have to have surgery, depending on the severity. if i don't have to have surgery, i was wondering how long i should stay away from dance. a nurse told me not to do it for now because it was too "bouncy" dancing. I am trying to get into prelim and am worried at how much time i will miss. :(
i think mostly i was just venting here, but if anyone elsehad this happen, let me know how you dealt with it! thanks a lot!

This year has been particularily difficult for dancers, with the loss of some members of our Irish Dancing family.

Just remember you always have special Irish Dancing guardian angels watching over you.

Rest in Peace Laura, Ashleigh, Mae and June, you will never be forgotten.

As Oireachtas time approaches, remember that it is an honour just to have gotten that far. Dance the best that you can dance. The results are purely subjective, but the satisfaction of knowing that you danced the best that you could dance is something no one else can give you.

Good Luck, and don't forget to that the people that have helped you get that far, your teachers and your parents.

Ok I really do hate advertising things, but every once and a while something good comes along...

I was told by one of my clients at the schools teaching clinic that this was a great product, so having similar problems to what she had I had to go and get it..

It is the obus forme massage roller, it can be heated or frozen, and it doubles as a foot massager. Frozen it is great for those achy burny feet after dancing.

Warm it can be used for achy muscles like tight shoulders, and cold for post dancing muscles.

It was fairly cheap only 10 bucks, but seems to be of many uses.

Worth trying.

Hello... my first time here. Anyways, to the point. As I said, I am VERY accident prone. Can't walk through the living room without falling over something, be that the couch or the entertainment center. I also have gait abnormality, so I tend to walk and dance kinda funny. Usually when I dance, I tend to rock side to side and I have a little trouble keeping my feet crossed. Do you know if there is anything I can do to help stop the rocking? Any way I can keep my feet crossed without having to look and check? Hmm, can't really look anyway cos I have muscle weakness just below my left eye, I'm cross eyed, and my left eye happens to be weakening, so it doesn't always look straight to me. Just my luck, huh?

She's not allowed to dance on it - yet - hopefully next week she can. She is in open and a very dedicated dancer. For any who were ever in a cast for a fracture, how long did it take you to get back to were you were with dance, once you could dance again. Back to the stamina and ability you had prior to the break.
She is very worried about the bit O. She injured it early August.

I finshed my exams 2 weeks ago, and did fairly well! I have 2 more weeks off and than I am back to school.

I am glad that I finally have found my calling.

I am planning on creating a website hopefully this week on Irish dance injuries and prevention, now that I finally have time.

If anyone has any suggestions for the website, please let me know of anything you can think of, as this website is primarily created by a dancer for dancers.

I don't have a tip right now... I haven't posted one in a long time and I apologize. I also have to apologize for the temporary lack of moderation on my part, school really got chaotic in the last month and I was feeling slightly on the stressed side.

Once again if you have a question that you don't feel comfortable posting on the website, please feel free to email me, and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

Have a great summer, or at least what is left of it! And Keep on dancing!

I sprained my ankle a little over a month ago at a performance when I landed wrong and rolled over on it. It didn't even start to swell until the next day when I went to the doctor and they determined after X-Rays that it was only a sprain. Was to take advil and ice it and wear an ace bandage. I hurt it again the day that I took the Ace Bandage off and now I am finally dancing again. It still hurts but so far its been okay except I can't point my toe. It will only go a small amount if anything when my other foot can point so much more. I have a feis coming up and while I've accomodated all of my steps around my injury (no toe stands since I can't bend my foot) I'm sure what to do about my lack of point. Should I wear tights and put my ace bandage over them so that at least it hints to the judges that I'm injured or should I just go for it? For those of you that have had sprains is this normal and how long did it take or what did you do to be able to regain your normal standard of dancing? Thanks for all of your help!

hi everyone! back in late april my foot started to hurt. i later found out i had a stress fracture in the navicular tarsal of my foot (the bone that takes the longest to heal) and have pre-periostitis in my tibias. i was in a cast and crutches for 2 weeks starting memorial day and this week was my first week for not having to wear my cast. i've been going to physical therapy twice a week and i can feel myself getting stronger. back in may when i had an x-ray done it was negative and 2 weeks ago i had a CT scan and my foot is still broken, but it's healing. i can start to dance 1 day next week for 30 mins. and gradually dance more if i have no pain (i have not had any pain since i started to wear my cast back in may). it doesnt hurt to run, jump, therapy, etc. i ride a stationary bike everyday for 30 mins. so my stamina isnt so bad when i start again. now my question is has anyone else broken this bone is your foot? or has had a stress fracture in your foot? if you did, how long did it take to heal? did it hurt when you went back to dance? did anything need major improvement (timing, crossing, up on toes, etc)? the thing is i'm a very powerful dancer and i'm afraid if i start to dance next week at home i will break it even more and it will take longer to heal. i don't know. i just dont understand bones. can by dancing one time break your foot even more? my doctor said i should be 100% healed by sept. 1st and right now i'm about 70% healed. have any of you broken your foot, danced, then broke it again? i'm so happy to be able to dance again, im just afraid i'll do something stupid, lol. tell me what you think! thank you, and do take care!

3 posts in one day... I think that is a record for me lately.

My biggest tip that I can offer to everyone... If you have an injury, take the time off that you need for it to fully heal, and in the process of healing, go and see a physiotherapist, massage therapist, sports therapist etc... to help speed up the healing and to promote better healing.

Just because it feels better does not mean that it has fully healed.

I know that it is difficult for most dancers to do this, but it is essential in preventing subsequent injuries.

I have noticed that it is getting close to the nationals (only a week away) and that there are a lot of nerves flying around... For some it is the travel there... for others it is the dancing.

Try diaphragmatic breathing... it is really beneficial for anxiety. Its almost like a meditation but not quite.
Go to http://www.pe2000.com/breathe_diaphragm.htm for some great tips on how to perform this breathing technique.

Another thing that may be helpful is to try going to your happy place... Grab a walkman and let your imagination loose for a few minutes... I know that it works for me before my exams... If you can find a nice quiet/ less noisy place ( which I know would be like finding a needle in a haystack).

Hot baths are good for relaxation... if you can get some kind of a bubble bath with lavender (I think healing garden has one), lavander has a calming effect. THe hot water will also help to warm up your muscles before you stretch... so you will get a double benefit.

I am wishing everyone dancing at the nationals the best of luck. I wish that I could be there, but I can't miss school...

Remember... it is more important for you to do your best than it is to win. Go out there and have fun, do what you do best.

I also noticed her dances are more confident-jumps higher. Now I feel bad she danced with so much pain. She really never complained but must've had pain. Just got myself a copy of the Irish Dancers Fitness Plan.

It has some great stretches, and some good posture, and breathing techniques.

However, I didn't feel that it was worth the 55 Euros. I was kind of disappointed in it. I was expecting more than what it was. The one section where the dancer is doing the warm up exercises is crazy. She is doing fairly fast movements, to slower music, and it annoyed me to the point of no return.

The stretches were very thorough, and even though they were some of the ones that most of us do every week in class, I learned that I had been doing some of the incorrectly over the years. There were also some areas addressed that are typically ignored, such as the toes, the shins, and the arches.

If you have the money to spend on it, go ahead and buy it. I think that there is definately something beneficial for each dancer out there.

If you are on a budget, there is another option
I bought the New York City Ballet workout a few years ago (at Blockbuster, but I have seen it in a few other places) and found this to be the better video of the 2. It has more stretches, as well as a variety of warm up exercises.

I actually found this to be the better of the 2 videos, even though it was not created for irish dancers in specific.

The choice is up to you. Both are good videos and I would highly recommend adding either one to your video library.

Things have been getting a little chaotic for me lately, so I haven't been able to check the board as often as I would like.

I usually try to check my email so if you have something that you would like anwsered a little faster than usual, there is a better chance of me getting it. Plus I have access to more information on specific injuries/conditions at school than I do at home.

I know that I have already given a tip of the week but I have another one.

Dancers, thank your teachers for making you the dancer you are today, and thank your parents for everything they have done to encourage you, and support you. Financilly and otherwise.

It is far easier and more fun to make friends. Some of my closest friends are also Irish dancers. Talk to your fellow competitors, make friends, become penpals. Congraulate someone on their win, don't be upset because it wasn't you. Just because you didn't win does not mean that you are not a good dancer, it just means that the judge saw something in someone else that day.

I know it is not the usual kind of tip that you are used to getting from me, but it does prevent emotional injury.

Finally, a website is in the works. Hopefully I will have it done in the next few weeks.

If you have any ideas, please let me know.

You guys are the greatest!

I found my arch brace.. its made by pedifix. I believe they have a website.

My tip for the week is:

Take care of your feet...

Give yourself a pedicure, or go and get one.

Get some lotion and give your feet a massage. It feels great and they will thank you for it later.

Get a pumice stone and get rid of the dry skin.

All the in laws want to talk about is injuries in ID. They say my DD will become injured at some point. They say they have heard that ID is not good for the body and she won't be able to walk by 20 yrs old. My daughter (9) has been dancing 4 years without injury-other tan flat feet and bunions. She dances everyday for 1 hr and 3 on weekends. Her wonderful teachers have taught them warm up routine. My question is are there really that many injuries.

I have had too many tests in the last few weeks to even tell you. So of course some of our fav spam posts made it to the MB.

I'm glad to see that some of you have gotten some good advice on this board, it lets me know that it has been working.

Please, please pass on the word about this board.

Part of the reasoning behind it is that I am planning on specializing in dance injuries when I finish school (only 60 more weeks to go!), and I would like to learn as much as I can about what is going on in the world of irish dance. Everyone benefits here!

Ok so tip of the week:

don't stretch when your muscles are cold, you have a greater chance of tearing the muscle fibres. Make sure that you have had an adaquate warm up before you stretch!

Feeling achy after dance class? Have a nice hot epsom salts bath. It will draw the nasty lactic acid that is causing the aches out of your muscles. 2-3 cups in a nice hot bath should do the trick!

Keep on dancing!

I am studying massage therapy, and the more I learn the more I am interested.

I learn something new every day, that I can apply to Irish dancing, which I think is great. I have actually learned things about my own body that I had no clue existed.

Ok so my first tip is about stretching.

The most effective way to stretch is to inhale and than go into the stretching movement on exhale, this allows you to relax and gives you the most effective stretch. Stretches should be held for 20-30 seconds.

Does anybody have my symptoms? I have really bad ankle pains when I land my jumps. I was in dance class tonight and my ankle was hurting when I was just doing my cross-overs. What do you do when this happens?

My daughter is in her second year Irish Step Dance and I'm concerned she's headed towards ingrown big toenails now that she's starting to be "on her toes". We keep the nails cut straight across and above the side edges, but the lower sides of the nail seem to round into the skin. Does anyone know what else we can do to prevent ingrown toenails from happening?
Thanks.

Just wanted to thank you all hwo responded to my post concering my daughter's knee. In fact, the mom and daughter who wrote concerning malalignment, prompt me to go back to PT with her. I asked them to tape her in order to help in diagnosis. I am happy to say that after weeks of therapy and several tapings she is back to dance. PAIN FREE. I think she will even make it to Nationals, which would be great seeing she has been out for quite some time.. Just wanted to lt you all know...and thank you.

Hullachan pro Irish soft & hard shoes offer impact padding to reduce impact by 80%. This reduces stress fractures, knee problems and the arch support laceing in the soft shoes really helps those with flat feet get a point.
Deirdre McDonnell in Riverdance has this problem & she wears Hpro exclusively. To find out more try hprona.com

Ever since the oireachtas was over (didn't get recalled, but that's ok, it was just my first year), I've been taking a break and haven't practiced much. Now when I go to dance class I seem to always roll my ankle a little bit after a big jump. What can I do to make my ankles stronger?

I am a mom hoping that someone out there has had a similiar situation. My duaghter is an open champion dancer and has a problem with her knee. She never injured herself. Several months ago at a routine Dr visit, a decrease in the range of motion in one knee was detected. Amonth later the range of motion was drastically worse and she had pain when ever she danced. During the past 4 months she has stopped dancing for a periodof time, been to pt several times a week, used antiimfamatories and has had several steroid injections in her knee. Her MRI's and Xrays have all come up negative. Currently she is not dancing and now suffers pain without exercising. I am seeking other opinions as her Dr is now wanting to do an exploratory arthroscopy. I want her to resume a normal life again. Anyone have any imput? Thanks

I've recently started ballet again, after not dancing for four years. (This is in addition to Irish) Anyway, ever since then my knees occaisonally will start hurting when I stretch them, which might have do with how you have to stretch your knees so far back in ballet, something I'm not used to. Also, when I do a lot of back rallies (especially on my left leg) my knee will start hurting really badly. Does anyone know of a way to prevent this? Thanks, and great idea for a board!
