Subject: The story behind the frickin' expensive smokes

It's great that you love Canada - I love it too - but hiking tobacco prices ISN'T a good thing. This is the first bad thing that Melissa's husband Dalton has done (the premier of Ontario, in case anyone missed the whole "Melissa Mcguinty/Jenna Trudeau" thing... lol). Shame on you, Dalton. Unless he starts doing some really good stuff soon, I'll be forced to put his "homeboy" status on hold.

See, they SAY they're raising the prices of cigarettes to stop people from smoking. Thing is, they're making billions of dollars on the extra money, regardless of how many people quit because of the increase. We're talking a 24% increase in prices - the only way they'd LOSE money is if at least 25% of all the smokers in Ontario quit.

Secondly, if they really wanted people to quit, they'd take the extra cash they're making on the smokes and use that to lower the prices of nicotine gum and the patch and Zyban and all the other stop-smoking products. Do you know how much the patch costs? A hell of a lot more than a pack of cigarettes.

And then there's the fact that they've DONE THIS BEFORE. The last time smokes went way, way up, people said, "Fuck this" and started buying cheap blackmarket cigarettes from the States and from the Native Reserves. The government realized they were losing serious cash (since frigging EVERYONE was buying smokes from reserves and not from the government), and dropped the prices wayyyy down, below what they were before, within a few months. Which only reiterates the fact that they're not hiking the prices for health reasons, but for money reasons.

Seriously. As much as I love politics, politics are fucked. Ack.

J.

PS - on a lighter note, DAMN I love the Trailer Park Boys! Greatest show EVER. O_O
