I was 9 (may,1959) after a gastroenteritis illness,I became badly constipated. The Pediatrician made house calls then. The Doctor ordered me to get a 32 ounce Castille soapy water + 2 level teaspoons of salt enema at a (given) temperature of 103-104 F.I had never had a enema before and it was very unpleasant. My Dad prepared and gave me the enema in the bathroom.I was face down on top of the towel chest with 2 bed pillows under me to elevate my butt, with my legs dangling down over the edge of the towel chest.I was a bit small bodyframed and about 62 lbs. This was a big enema, but the Doctor clearly told my Dad I needed a "full 1 quart soapy water enema" The black vulcanized rubber enema nozzle was made in France and was shaped like a ball bat and nearly 5" long but was inscribed on the nozzle as a "Pediatric" nozzle. The Doctor told my Dad to hang the enema bag 14 inches above the level of my butt.I bawled and cried non-stop from the minute my Dad inserted the enema nozzle into my rectum, until the enema bag was empty. The sensations of that warm soapy water + salt enema were "dreadful" it produced a irritating/burning sensation ,and at the point where 1/2 of the enema had run in,there was a very uncomfortable feeling of fullness/pressure in my gut and rectum. After all the enema had run in me,I was kept face down for 5 minutes with my Dad gently holding the black enema nozzle in my anus/rectum.I thought I was going to explode. After 5 minutes my Dad removed the nozzle, picked me up off the table and plopped me right down on the comode, where all that constipated bm and the enema nearly flew out of me.It was quite unpleasant, but I did need it.
