When you had your last doctor visit, how old were you, and if he or she took your temperature rectally, did you feel you were too old for it to be taken that way?

I was 14 or 15 the last time the doctor came to the house. I always shivered when I saw the black bag he carried with all the instruments he needed. First thing he did, right after feeling my glands around my neck, was to take my temperature. I always hoped to have it taken in my mouth, but expected the worst, since at the office it was always taken rectally. Sure enough, after shaking down the thermometer he opened the jar of vaseline, and I knew what was coming next. Somehow it didn't bother me as much when the doctor took my temperature, rather than the nurse.

I was 17 when the doctor last made a house call, he did take my rectal temperature and it was no problem for me at all. I am nearly 60 now and still have my rectal temp taken.

Last doctor visit was when I was 12. I was home with a cold. The doc took my oral temperature. After he was finished, I heard him tell my mom that he could use an enema if I hadn't had a bowel movement.

I didn't have one. Mom called me into her bedroom. My granny also in there. She told me she needed to take my temperature. Naturally I assumed that it would in my mouth but no, She said that she's taking it "the other way"
I hadn't seen the towel on her bed. I had to take my PJ bottom off and lay on my stomach. While I laid there with the RT in me (felt okay) mom fixed the enema bag.
Out came the RT. I saw granny holding the bag. Mom put in the nozzle. Felt funny when mom separated my buttocks and stuck the nozzle in.

got my RT taken until I was 15 if I had a cold or sore throat. Enemas until 17.

Well, we had a house visit about a month ago. It wasn't for me - my daughter Melanie (age 9) fainted on her way out of the bathroom. It was her grandma who insisted on calling the health clinic, and to my surprise the family doctor came around.
He did take her oral temperature.
I wanted to believe it was just dehydration but before long he turned the talk to bowel movements (he did, not me!) suggested that she might have overstrained herself trying to do a smelly (he didn't use those words of course!) And so...he gave Mel a rectal exam, which she was not at all happy about, esp. when I had to help get her into poeition!

The doc then advised me to give her a suppository and said "I'll leave it to you, I know you know what you're doing here..." When he'd gone I ended up giving her an enema. Misery, of course - she pleaded with me not to do it and cried all the way through it. But of course it made her do masses of smelly evil, so it was worthwhile

In old times a rectal exam was mandatory if the family doctor suspected constipation of a child! At last a doctor who did his duty! Sue, I don't know the position you have put Mel, perhaps turned on her belly. My mother and aunt were raising apart my and my sisters's legs for a good palpation of the tummy! And believe me it was high time your dughter had to be filled with a good enema! You haven't be shy of washing her out when needed!

She was turned on her side, the way they do it in hospitals.

I'm reviving this partly to apologise for adjusting my daughter's age (as I did in those days, in a vain attempt to see off the professional offence-takers) - and partly to mention that this event was something of a turning-point: it was then that the doctor she used to see pretty much gave up trying to find a physical cause for her recurrent constipation, at which point I (along with her grandparents) started to become more controlling (not just of her bowel-function).

I don't know whether this really belongs in this thread, but one of the landmark traumatic experiences of my childhood was a visiting district-nurse giving me an enema when I was 6 (the details have been shared several times on the enema forums). Four years later we had another house-call from a nurse, my sister being the victim this time. I didn't know exactly what happened at the time, but I now know it wasn't another enema, it was a manual evacuation. Which is something our mother attempted when she was at her most sadistic - I suspect she persuaded the clinic to send the nurse mainly because she wanted to learn the technique from a professional.

Now that voy 58940 has been shut down, the enema/suppository people will have to hang out on this forum, forcing a change of emphasis - unless the editor decides to step in and plug the gap?

My mother took my temperature rectally until I was 13, but I never recall the doctor taking my temperature on a house call. My mother would take it prior to the doctor's arrival and simply tell him what it was with of course the qualifier of "rectally" at the end.

It looks like the doctor's job was not to take temperatures but to give you a shot of antibiotics which of course always went into your bottom.

The last time I remember the doctors coming over was when I was around 14 years old. I was in bed in my underpants only as I was burning up with a fever of almost 104 (orally at this age) Doctor pulled the sheets back asked my to roll over and it was undies down to my knees while he loaded up the syringe. It hurt so bad I laid there about a minute while he gave my mother further instructions and told me he would be back in 3 days if the fever didn't break. Lucky for me the fever broke.

I was around 5-6 y/o the last time our family doctor made a house call. I had a high fever and some congestion. I don't remember how he took my temperature. The parts I remember: He asked me questions, shined a light in my eyes and down my throat, took my pulse, felt my glands, opened my PJ shirt, thumped my chest. Then he poked around on my chest with his stethoscope to check my heart and lungs. When he was done with me, he consulted with Mom and told her which medicines to give me.

In France when I was a boy in the 50's and beguinning 60's, there was still many doctors who took the temperature rectally rather than orally, especially to children and even teenagers. It was assumed that the result was more precise and right. So a lot of mothers used to take the temperature rectally to their sons and daughters at least until they were about 12 age. After most of the mothers left their children take themselves their temperature but told them to take it rectally.

When the doctor who was a middle aged rather nice with children was called at my house, he took my temperature rectally since I was about 12 age and even one time later at 14 age when I had a strong fever. My mom was in the room to listen to what this doctor said and to watch what he did when I was still under 12 age but I am almost certain that she did not look at me the last time when I was already 14 age.

Before the coming of the doctor, my mother did not take my temperature rectally nor orally. But the days after she did it one or two times by day according his instructions and she took it rectally until I was over than 12 age.

At that time, I don't remember any embarrassment and it was expected by children to have a rectal temperature taken rather than an oral one.

I was more embarrassing when we had to go to the nurse's office of the school at middle school when we felt being bad. Generally, the school nurse who was a woman rather authoritarian and strict with us, began the examination by taking our temperature and she did it always rectally. It was useless to complain and to ask her to take it orally, she replied that she knew better than us how it was right to take temperature and that as long as we were only schol student boys under her control for health, she did it rectally even if we did not like it.
I remember that she added the first time that my embarrassment was stupid since she had seen before mine such a lot of naked buttocks than it could not be an issue for her and for me.
Then I was instructed to remove my trousers and to pull down my brief and to lay on my stomach on a medical bed. As it was like an order, thre was no way to refuse. when she came to insert in the anus the thermometer, she pulled down lower until anklesmy brief and then she inserted the thermometer more brutally than the doctor at home. When she had finished, she took out the thermometer and then she gave me an unexpected slap on my still naked bottocks before telling me to lift up and to dress again.
Fortunately, I did not have to see her several times, only three times for the four years of middle school between 12 and 15 age.

At high school, I had never my temperature taken rectally by the nurse, she did it orally.

I knew also that in summer camps, the temperature was generally taken rectally by the nurse of the camp for boys until 12 or even 14 age when they had fever and seemed to be sick.

At the physical examination for military service at 18 age, I had like the other draftees still a temperature taken rectally during the physicals but it was the last time.

In France, even in the 80's and 90's, rectal temperature was still very common for children and teenagers.

I had the measles when I was almost 11 years old. The doctor was my father's girlfriend (my parents had divorced recently) who worked as a school doctor. She did not live with us. She came to the house and took my temperature rectally several times a day. Unlike Jean the frenchie, I found it very embarrassing, especially because my sister could pass by the door and see me lying on my bed on my tummy or on the side with the thermometer in my bottom.

my mom would take rectal and usually leave the door open, and my younger sister would come by and try to sneak a peek

The free clinic for youngsters living in financially disadvantaged households where I work has limited space and only uses glass thermometers. Temps are taken in area of the waiting room dedicated for that purpose.
