A number of years ago I was browsing in a medical section of a bookstore in NYC, and found an article stating some 2000 women throughout the country were participants (willing or knowledgeable of the temperature taking protocol for the study, or not, I'm not sure), who had rectal temperatures taken on them.
As for the use of rectal temperatures in 2016, though probably not as common as in the past, may well, still be used . I'm talking about adults. The care giver may have instructions from a doctor to do such readings. A patient's condition may require it.
If the doctor you mention in Georgia is someone you have had associated with as a patient, you would most likely know his/her exam protocols, including his/her preferred route of body temperature measurement. Also, many doctors assign vital signs to their nurse(s) if they have one or more, though that is not to say the doctor himself/herself won't take a temperature and other vital signs. Your post was in March, and I suspect you either went to or did not go to this doctor. As well, if you opt to NOT have a rectal temperature taken, so advise the doctor of that. Good luck. Interesting post.
