I can recall a few house calls when I was little. I can only recall getting a penicillin shot at home once though. But I do recall having a rectal temperature taken many times. The doctor always did for house calls, but even more I recall a nurse doing it.
My little brother was born when I was 7. After Mom brought him home from the hospital, a nurse came every day (I think) to check on him and Mom for a few weeks -- apparently this was not unusual in the 50s, in fact, I believe sometimes nurses stayed in homes. In any case, I had some kind of cold or the flu and Mom and the nurse were concerned Robby would catch it. After the nurse checked on him and Mom, she'd come into my room and I'd have to have my throat checked and roll over on my tummy for my temperature.
