Anxiety awaiting the doctor's house call in my youth lasted most of the day because he normally arrived in late afternoon. When he finally arrived, the actual examination was not unpleasant but what I feared was the treatment. Eventually came the dread instruction to roll over for a penicillin shot. I remember burying my head in the pillow with bottom bared for a seeming eternity until feeling the swab and painful jab where I sit (and later couldn't sit).

I had similar anxiety when our family doctor would make a house call. But my anxiety wasn’t because of a shot in the butt. He would always ask me when I had my last BM and then recommend to my mom that she give me a soap and water enema. That word would hit me like a ton of bricks. I would tell Mom I didn’t need an enema but it feel on deaf ears. While the doctor was still there she would get the enema bag out of the closet and fill it with warm water and a few squirts of liquid ivory soap.
As soon as he left I would be summoned to the bathroom for the doctors orders enema. 3 or 4 enemas later I was back in bed. When I was sick Mom would always give me enemas, whether the doctor ordered one or not. How about you Nick? Were enemas part of your ‘sick in bed’ regimen?

I too was nervous when the doctor would arrive!
I would be under the covers waiting for him to talk to my Mother then come into my bedroom. Then I would hear those dreaded words. "Roll over to your tummy. Time to take your temperature." I hated that part !!!

Usually did not get an enema, unless the Doctor ordered it. Then my Mom was more than happy to obey him...
