 Having grown up in the era of penicillin shots my most traumatic medical memories from youth and early adolescence were bending over the lap of a receptionist/medical assistant to get them in my vulnerable bare bottom. When very young I didn't know what was really happening because I was encouraged to think the posterior sting I felt was the girl pinching me back there!

Where I grew up in Scandinavia, we used to get penicillin, whenever we had a fever disease, but always as tablets.

But what I remember from early childhood is getting vaccine for poliomyelitis in buttocks, vaccines for diphtheria in arm, and for tuberculosis at the backside of the shoulder.

Apart from that I remember frequent analgesic shots in the mouth for dental work.
