I entered the hospital for a hernia repair and they put me in the pediatric ward. The first room had four beds and they told me "this is where we put our bigger guys." A really cool male nurse came in to take my vitals. When he pulled out the thermometer, I looked at him apprehensively and he assured me it would have to be in the butt this time. He kept that promise for the rest of the day. The next day he must have been off since the girl nurses took it rectally. That night an attendant came in at four am to shave me and an hour later I was awakened again for an inspection of the job. Upon returning to my room after the recovery, the rectal temperatures took up again. I do recall when I was little, my mom would always take my temperature rectally. She'd take my pants/PJ bottoms and my undies down to mid thigh and place me over her knee. After lubing the glass thermometer with petroleum jelly she would take one hand and separate my bottom cheeks and with the other gently insert the bulb of the thermometer about an inch into my rectum. My favorite part was when she rested her warm hand on my bottom with the thermometer between he middle and index fingers for the recommended four minutes and I just laid there patiently awaiting the time. When I was six I began playing doctor and taking rectal temperatures in much the same way.
