I went to school in the 50's and 60's and group physicals were the norm unless your folks had lots of money and sent you to the family doctor. Mostly I remember the physicals for sports. These exams were done in the gym and was performed by a local doctor. Each year was pretty much the same, with the doctor listening to our heart and lungs and checking for hernias. We also had our height and weight recorded. I think the doctor did an overall body scan to check for deformities. Each year we had a different doctor. I think it was an easy money day, and the doctors took turns each year. My senior year the exam was done by a female doctor. It was for the boys on the freshman, j.v. and varsity basketball teams. Each of the teams were let out for one class. The freshman team had theirs done first and the word was out about the female doctor before we on the varsity team had ours done. We had to strip down to our shorts before we went behind a screened area, and had to remove our shorts for the exam. The doctor had a nurse recording our height, weight and anything else the doctor made note of. Neither doctor or nurse were young or good looking, but being nude in front of them caused erections from more than one of the players. No one admitted it right away, but by the next day, just about everyone on all of the teams admitted to having an erection. I think the old line from a nurse or female doctor of "its nothing, we haven't seen before",never saw so many different ones all in a row. That's what I remember most aboutany of my school physicals.
