Here are some boarding school memories from late 60s, early 70s that fit in this forum. I changed school when I was seven to a Boarding school, a Prep school as it was called. My father had warmed me up to this event by telling me what a fantastic time he had when he had been at boarding school, all the 'japes' and 'scrapes'. Dormitories and tuck boxes, Matrons and Housemasters. So off I went, nervously, at seven to my traditional British Prep school,
It was organised by 'Houses', of which there were four. In each House there would have been about 30 boys, aged 7 to 13. There were dormitories, junior ones for the younger boys with an earlier 'lights out' and senior ones for the older boys. The important people were the Housemaster, Mr M, Mrs M our Housemistress & Housemasters wife and the Matron. Miss L.
If you were sick you could ask the Matron or Housemistress to see the school Nurse. You would be sent to the Nurses room to queue up with other boys waiting, or to knock on her door if there was no queue. The Nurse had her room, plus two dormitories so sufficiently sick boys could stay where she could keep an eye on them.
All boys also had periodic visits to the Nurse for a check up. This was at least once a year, but seemed a bit random when it would be..
The Nurse was a typical boarding school staff type of middle aged no nonsense woman, She wore a dark blue nurses uniform and an old fashioned folded nurses hat We called her Nurse B, Her room was quite large, with her desk, and an examination couch and cupboards with medicines and the various plasters, bandages and anitispetics dished out most afternoons to those who had taken a bash at sports .
I remember going for colds and she would take my temperature, listen to my chest, and mostly send me to classes but let me off sports afternoons. When she kept us in we had to stay in bed the day with nothing but a book to read. I was there once on own and it was very boring. Another time with other boys and we were messing around. She came in and warned us we were not too sick for a spanking.
I went to her for stomach ache a couple of times too. She asked me when i had 'opened my bowels', i doubt the answer mattered too much, i was sent to sit on the toilet behind a screen. When I hadn't done anything after 10 minutes sitting there I was given a suppository to make me go. After the first time i wasn't going back unless the stomach ache was bad. Those days regular bowels for children was considered a big thing, it was by my mother, and it was at school. If you hadn't 'been' you could ask matron for a spoonful of syrup that would ensure you went the next day. Being sent to the Nurse was a far worse option (suppository) so boys would ask for a spoonful of syrup.
Some boys were sufficiently sick that they needed the doctor. He came to the school and saw us in the Nurses room, with her present, This happened to me once when the doctor checked my throat, i can't really remember why.
Examinations, I suppose i had five of these, first one soon after i started. I remember being told to undress to my underpants, after which she examined me quite thoroughly, more as a doctor would. Checked my ears, eyes, mouth, listened to my chest, took my temperature, felt around my tummy. When that was done i was told to take my pants off, and she gave me a pretty thorough check of penis, testes, with her fingers and then made me touch my toes so she could see my anus.
Happy days!
