 My mom or my gram, dad never took my temp. As to how old, I never minded RT so pretty much till I left home at age 18.
As I said, we only had rectal thermometers in our house, I'm sure mom and dad took their temps rectally too.
My doctor's nurse asked at age 13 if you wanted oral, I just let her take it rectally. They didn't even have oral thermometers in the exam rooms, the nurse had to leave to get one, if you wanted oral.

Did you continue taking your rectal temperature on yourself after you turned 18? My mother stopped when I was 9 or 10. But my sister, because of her disability, always continued to have her temperature taken rectally through her adulthood. Not only at home, but at the doctors' office and at the hospital. This includes male nurses who have taken her rectal temperature.
