I really disliked our pediatrician as I was growing up. He seemed awful ornery, gruff, and abrupt. He made frequent housecalls as well as seeing us kids in his office. His nurse Marge was also very intimidating, especially with the syringe to give shots.

The doctor caused pain when he examined my penis by retracting the skin and putting some ointment on. He used to threaten me with hospitalization for dieting with regular laxatives and enemas to get my weight down.

I heard him many times telling my mom "just give that kid an enema". She followed his and Marge's orders/suggestions and seemed to use that as an excuse regularly. Any visit usually included inquiries regarding my BM's and frequency. A daily BM was expected and failure meant an enema from mom or grandma who often baby sat us kids.

About the time I turned 12, I had my last visit to him and he retired. My younger sisters got a new Pediatrician and I started seeing my parent's doctor and nurse. He and his nurse were also proponents of enemas in lieu of laxatives.

Throughout my teens, he and his nurse had suggested I use an enema if constipation was still an issue. The nurse even gave me personal instructions when I had an appointment at age 17. She gave me a disposable enema bag to take home but, by then I had already obtained a fountain syringe and used it as desired or necessary. The doctor even called me late in the day asking "were you successful with the enema?"

I replied that it took care of my problem.

I grew up in an economically depressed area a time when glass thermometers were still in used at a clinic that provided basic medical to financially disadvantaged families. At the pediatric section, there was a room where temperatures were taken. I remember different containers filled with alcohol (which filled the air) where the used glass thermometers were dispensed for each kind of thermometer, both after use in the room where temperatures were taken. Most kids over the age of 5 years old got a temperature taken in the mouth while those who were considered not capable of keeping a glass oral thermometer in the mouth without a mishap, were subjected to having a temperature taken rectally with a glass rectal thermometer lying face down on a table.

Privacy was an unaffordable luxury as I figure that it was more efficient to take the temperature of a few patients at one time. Although I was not one of them, those that had a temperature taken "the other way" vented their strong opposition to it, which served to draw attention to themselves which they soon realized.

At the time I had chronic sore throats (which always meant a getting a shot, you know where) and so there was quite a lot of opportunities for seeing rectal temps taken.
