Have you attempted to discuss these issues with the kids at a time when not in crisis mode, such as when you're about to administer an enema? I don't mean to "butt" in, but as I've posted previously, I had been self administering on a regular basis by the age of 12. I actually started by age 6, although it was awhile later that I became fairly adept at it.

Fluid volumes can be very intimidating, especially for kids. 1-2 pints can be sufficient to trigger a BM, especially with a soapy solution. I seldom took a full bagful (1.5-2 qts.) at their ages. A rinse enema was usually quite comfortable and assured a complete emptying of the lower bowel. Wiping was far simpler after an enema and irritation eliminated.

One thing that has improved enema use, is the ability to hang the bag near the toilet at an optimal height while on the toilet. These quickie enemas are very helpful, and a more thorough "cleanse" can be used more occasionally.

This day and age, a Bidet can be attached under the toilet seat for about 30 bucks. Less toilet paper, clogged toilets, and bum irritation is well worth it. Elimination is much more tolerable as a result.

The extended family would come over to enjoy using grandma and grandpa's bathrooms when in distress. Even the grandkids found that pooping was far more comfortable, especially when backed up from those common neglectful habits. The adult kids all have at least a single bidet at home now.

I only suggest giving things a try if the medical folks are on board with treating the issues with some simple injection of water. My mom, grandma, and the doctors were strong advocates of simple enemas in lieu of laxatives. They still recommended the dietary adjustments as the first step.
