Growing up in the era of penicillin shots, getting an injection in the bottom was my greatest (usually justified) fear. Whenever the doctor paid a house call, I nervously watched each time he reached into his bag and was always relieved to see him take out anything other than a syringe. My caution was, however, futile because I always had to assume position before the shot was prepared and, therefore, never saw it. Eventually came the dread instruction to roll over and I waited several minutes with my bare bottom trembling in anticipation while the shot was prepared until I felt the alcohol swab where I sit, followed by a painful jab back there. Those shots seemed to hurt more and take longer than the ones I got bending over the receptionist's lap in his surgery, possibly because the relative lack of embarrassment (the girl watching me get them) left me more conscious of what was happening. On the other hand, my bottom seemed less tender afterwards because, being in bed, I was less aware of my inability to sit down.
My first symptom of any illness was usually a sore throat and I regarded the treatment as merely exchanging a sore throat for a sore bottom.
