I am neither well-read, logical, nor gifted with a mind for strategy. However, from what little I know of the history of this century's wars, especially the Cold War, I know that diplomacy is a powerful weapon. Of course, it is very difficult to end a war without a clear victory and a slough of heroes- and that is not very easily achieved by treaties.
Also, I am not only confused by, but also disgusted with Paul's cleverly-worded retractions of the pertinence of ethics in this matter. Though, I suppose it is not his objective: examining the moral cost of actions, esp. politically ,motivated ones. The extermination of innocent civilians, however, seems to be the central issue. Just? Unjust? As you said, these words inherently imply an ethical dispute. Why do you not tackle it?
On the other hand, I admire very much all of you debaters' abilities with evidence. I have neither the background nor the brain to pack a case so tightly. But don't you guys ever get tired of dancing around every issue with so many evasive steps? I am sorry, though- I don't want to insult you. I'm just curious as to what you really think was right? Why? What happened to Justice here, eh? Blind Justice. What choice would you have made? And for goodness sakes- why do you think we HAD a COLD War after Hiroshoma?
