This story line offers a real challenge to our conventional notions of justice. Even if Warren were sentenced to death for Katrina's and Tara's murders, the chances of his actually being executed in any but an extended time frame are far less than his chances of eventually making parole. A good defense lawyer could do a lot with the case: a young man, intelligent, falling into bad company and embracing bad ideas, good prospect for rehab--Clarence Darrow did the riff in The Leopold/ Loeb case. And if a decade down the road it should come to a Texas cocktail for Warren, how many good liberals like the ones on this board would be signing petitions and holding vigils?! After all, who cares about a couple of anonymous deaths all those years ago?

My point is that justice involves more than the perpetrator. It embraces the victims, those who love them, and the whole community. Justice requires proportionality, in terms of time and in terms of punishment. At bottom, that's why, IMHO, Willow has so many supporters. In our hearts, all of us know that our current system is unlikely to deliver justice to the community--as opposed to eventual mercy for Warren.
