Phantom Edit Arrives on DVD
Thu, Sep 19, 02 09:17:05 PM EST

In the upcoming weekend edition of Film Threat, you'll find a new article on the Phantom Edit, new to DVD. Here's a clip with details and debate:
No film has spawned more criticism or debate than George Lucas’ flawed Star Wars prequels. In fact, Star Wars: Episode I has been re-edited twice by fans in what has come to be known as the West Coast and East Coast versions. The West Coast version has resurfaced on DVD complete with commentary from the Phantom Editor himself. (The "Phantom" was recently revealed to be just a regular guy named Mike J. Nichols, a fan living in Santa Clarita, California.) The disc also has a few custom-made deleted scenes. One deleted scene on the disc includes the infamous “waterfall sequence,” except in this cut, Jar Jar goes tumbling over the edge of the waterfall wailing in a death shrill as he falls to his doom. It’s hysterical! The Phantom Editor also adds his own commentary track in which he reveals not only why he decided to re-edit Episode I, he also explains exactly how he did it with detailed explanations of the software employed to create this enhanced incarnation of the film. Yes, it is definitely a better cut of Star Wars: Episode I. It’s ten minutes shorter. Jar Jar’s unfunny antics are nearly non-existent. Anakin is less annoying since outbursts like “Yippee!” have been thankfully excised. But, the film is still a turd, in my opinion. When Lucas completes all six films of his originally planned 12-part space opera, there will be no less than four different versions of the classic trilogy floating around – the originals as released to theaters, the original video releases which include some changes, the Special Editions, and the upcoming Ultimate Editions on DVD. So why shouldn’t fans get creative and edit their own versions? My trouble with the Phantom Editor is that he doesn’t go far enough. I’d like to see far more radical re-edits of all the Star Wars films. Here are some suggestions for future editors who wish to take the time (yeah, lots and lots of time) and create their own versions of the Star Wars films...
