John Palaelogus, 1392-1448; Byzantine Emperor, was the eldest of six sons of Manuel II. His Empire consisted of the space within the walls of Constantinople; wherein he was constantly under threat from the Ottoman Turks.

John toured western Europe, seeking alliance with any king, Emperor, ruler, with an army, to give him aid in his quest to overthrow this threat; offered to submit the Greek church to the rule of the Papacy, if the Papacy wuld grant him the help he so desperately wanted.

He caused a council to be convened, allegedly to discuss theological differences, between Greek and Western churhces; called together by Eugenius IV, which John attended, with his brother (Demetrius) in attendance also.

The debate began April 9th, 1438, and raged for several months, dealing with several theological questions, and one ecumenical, i.e., the Latin claim that "the Pope is, by God's ruling, the supreme earthly ruler of the whole church of Christ."

That there was no Pope known to Christianity at the close of the sixth century, was clearly known. Boniface III accepted the title of "Universal Bishop" from Emperor Phocas in 606 a.d., but it was rejected by the church. Succession from St. Peter was beginning to be claimed in the "Apostolic sees" in the west.

Nicholas I a.d.863, by use of forged "decretals" laid claim to supremecy over all other Pachriarchates, establishing Rome as "Supreme Apostolic See."

Gregory VII pronounced the title of "Pope" as the sole and peculiar dignity of the Bishops of Rome; a.d.1073

1545 to 1563; the council of Trent, after the Northern revolt against the papacy of Rome and "School doctrine," sat fro seventeen years, inventing the "Roman Catholic Church" out of the remaining National churches, depriving them of their nationalities, and making out of them all, WITH THE MISSIONS IN AMERICA, One mixed Confederation, to which it gave a new creed, and new organic laws; debasing the Episcopate, to establish the supremecy of the "Pope" as the "universal Bishop," reducing other Bishops to Presbyters, acting as his local vicars.

If you want to really "Know" your church, you should read Encyclopaedia Brittanica; Ante-Nicene Fathers; and "The church in crisis; A history of the General Councils - 325-1870; which has the Imprimatur of ArchBishop Francis Cardinal Spellman, of New York.

The main obstacle to Catholicism, is the simplicity of Catechismal teaching, which makes real research too difficult for the average Catholic mind. They have had a lifetime of being spoon fed, what they should believe, and have a difficult time whenever they set out to learn somehting on their own. It takes real effort to overcome this habit of obeisance to a system based in ignorance.
