I also cut my own bearing edges. I started out using a router by hand but after messing up a few edges I built a table. I have the router off center toward the front so that I could keep the table size managable (read, able to buy the stuff and fit in my small area) By having the router near the front the rest of the table supports the drum and I have good control and can see what I am doing. Having messed up a shell since (knock wood). Personally, I would limit hand operated routers to doing some rework and the like. It is difficult to control and too easy to knock an edge out of flat.
