Making a show of setting the whip on the ground, he holds something red out instead. Using a surprisingly clean thumb, --surprising for a cowboy, anyway-- he breaks the object in two, holding it out again and letting the sweet smell of apple reach the mare's sensitive nose. Hopefully she would appreciate a treat.
