Subject: Just Getting Started

Well, I recognize some of the names here-I am a MGH member for only about 3 weeks. I will try to intro myself as briefly(ha) as possible!
I first had sx almost 10 years ago. Sx subsided after about ll months.I had difficulty walking, problems with bowel and bladder functioning-did intermittent catheterizing of myself 5x daily for about the whole ll months. I had trouble verbalizing things ie: I would be thinking that's a pretty purple coat-yet I would call it orange instead-stupid stuff.Tremors were bad. I would go to the bathroom only when family was home-because I couldn't be sure I would be able to get up!!!Well symptoms subsided but never went away, and life went on. Raised our son and daughter, got them married off and have now one lovely 2 year old grandson.
On August 25, l999, I awakened with left sided weakness-within 1/2 hour I was having trouble swallowing and could not move my left side at all. I was told I had empty nest syndrome(the nest had been empty for 5 years!) and that there was nothing wrong with me. Well-I have worked as an RN for l8 years-I KNEW something was wrong!! Anyway, I'm still not diagnosed with anything. I saw an MS specialist finally just last week-he said it could be or maybe not. He told me he would follow me and treat symptoms. I am on 20mg Baclofen three times daily. and I was started on Neurontin last Friday-right now at 200 mg three times daily. I wear a leg brace-have spasms and foot drop in the left side. Wear a wrist support on the left wrist. I have not been pain free for over a ;year.
I describe my pain to others ass "like taking an ice pick-placing it over open flames and getting it red hot-then driving that pick into the very morrow of my bones." Sounds pretty painful and it is-but you all probably know that.
I knew I couldn't be brief!!!!
Anyway-just taking it minute by minute-day by day just wasn't working for me!
Glad to meet you all-we can share our frustration together! AND Laugh-always try to laugh!!!!!!!Memakathy
