Subject: Vanessa Prentiss

This was posted by Chris at danfling's board several months ago. I hope she doesn't mind that I posted it here in order to be read by new people!

Vanessa Prentiss told Lance that she did not trust Lori, and she believed that Lori would bring despair to Lance's life.

"Mother, I'm an adult. And I'm capable of making my own decisions. My own choices. I happen to admire Miss Brooks. I think she's a captivating, beguiling young woman."

"That kind of beauty can be dangerous. And I don't want to see you get hurt."

He assured her that he was capable of taking care of himself. Vanessa hired a detective to prepare a dossier on Lori. And in conversation, she mentioned Lori's education, and her involvement with a Jed Andrews.

"How would you know about my involvement with Jed?" Lori burst out.

"I-I"

"And don't you dare say I mentioned it to you in passing. I never once discussed Jed, or any of my past relationships with you, or Lance. SO he couldn't have mentioned it to you either."

"I wasn't going to offer any denials. I had you investigated, Miss Brooks."

Lori exploded. "You had me investigated?"

"That's right."

"How dare you snoop into my background?"

"You've been spending a great deal of time with my son...I thought Lance's involvement with you would be short-lived...that you would be nothing more than a dalliance."

"I'm sure that's what you hoped for, considering all your attempts to rid yourself of me, with your nonstop hostility."

"I wanted to know what kind of woman my son was becoming serious about. My curiosity about you is perfectly normal."

"There's nothing normal about you."

Lori told Lance that she refused to come to the penthouse, that although she had nothing to hide, she did not appreciate her past being investigated. "Lance, your mother is ill...Oh, dammit! I'm not going to use euphemisms! Your mother is crazy. Insane."

"Lori, I won't tolerate you speaking of Vanessa that way."

"Lance, for God's sake, she parades around that penthouse covered in veils, and she has too much time on her hands, dreaming up conspiracy theories, thinking people are against her. She sees me as a threat to you. She fears I'm going to take you away from her...I just can't take anymore of her suspicions and snide remarks. And this thing with the private eye..."

Lance told Vanessa that Lori was the woman he loved, and that there was room for Lori and Vanessa in his life. "I don't understand why you're castigating me for having her background looked into," Vanessa said.

"You violated her privacy, Vanessa."

"Out of interest and loyalty to you. Lance, you are so besotted by her physical beauty that you haven't considered what this woman could be about. She could be a threat to our livelihood."

"Oh, Vanessa, for heaven's sake, what are you talking about?"

"Prentiss Industries, Lance. Did it occur to you that we could be a victim of industrial espionage."

"Are you suggesting that Lori is a spy, that she's working for our competition?"

"It's a possibility."

"Oh, Vanessa that's preposterous and you know it. Just stop it. Now, you know perfectly well why you had this dossier gathered. You wanted to see if you could find something unflattering, embarrassing about Lori...Anything that would make her less appealing to me. You know, very well, that that was why you retained this investigator..."

"I fear for your happiness, Lance."

So on and so forth. Hogan Sheffer should apply this story to Barbara and Paul. They should show Barbara venturing outside of her home, and having people gawking at her, in horror. "Mommy, look at that lady," a little boy screamed, pointing.

Mommy gathers the child. "I am so terrible sorry," she says to Barbara and Paul.

Paul complains to Kim about the outing.

Barbara could spend her free hours holed up in her home, looking through a scrapbook, having flashbacks of when she was beautiful.

She could call Margo to her house, and in a dimly lit room. tell Margo that she was so terribly sorry about the heartache she caused Margo, when she led Margo to think she had had an affair with Tom.

"Barbara, all of that is behind us. That happened so very long ago. I've moved on with my life. I have Tom, and the children."

"I know...But you see, I wonder," Barbara said in a tone that was an eerie whisper.

"What?"

"If what happened at the farm was my punishment for some of the things I've done in the past...Karma. Divine reciprocity."

Barbara's birthday was just around the corner, and Kim tossed her a party.

Barbara doesn't show up. Kim suggest that Barbara speak to Dr. Michaels (I think she's a therapist)

Barbara could wear veils and hide in her house ala Mrs. Haversham from GREAT EXPECTATIONS.

And maybe Barbara could do crazy things to rid herself of Rose, and accidentally kill the former showgirl.

And Barbara could be carted off to Serenity Haven, and while there maybe Jen could get pregnant by some bum.

To me, the show is too newfangled. Classic soap opera stories could make it more interesting, imho.
