- A MONTH HAS PASSED -- SASSY, 21:05:58 06/15/02 Sat
A month has passed since I said *CIRCLES* to my Packer Pal for the last time. I guess I just needed to come here for some comfort.
I NEVER was one who believed in talking to your loved ones after they had died.....until now. I feel Ed here with me every day and it just seems so right to talk with him. It shouldn't be any surprise that I feel this way -- Ed was a very important person in my life. He taught me to see things in myself that I didn't know where there. I learned some valuable lessons from him and I'm truly grateful.
Thanks Packer Pal - for making me feel so VERY special!

- ED -- Tamara, 17:47:33 06/06/02 Thu
I'm sitting here racking my brain, wishing I had a cool Ed story to tell. Truth is, there isn't one. Well...no specific story that is. The only thing I can say is how wonderful it was just knowing Ed. I know I mentioned it in the Kirk before, but what I remember most about Ed was his sincerity. He was so full of love and kindness, even from the moment I had just met him. He made you feel so welcome...no matter what the affair - Surrey, Starbucks gatherings, or especially to his home.
To me, it's almost cool that I have no Ed story, because Ed just being Ed has made an impact on me. Ed, I loved your smile too. :) I'm sending love to you, thank you for making it easy to know you.

- To Ed -- Sassy, 21:26:31 05/31/02 Fri

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, PACKER PAL!!!

This is my favorite picture of the two of us. It was taken last October at Surrey. I have an infinite number of wonderful memories of my Packer Pal. He was one of the BEST friends I've ever had and I miss him dearly. I was known as "Ed's Angel" but now I feel he's become MY Angel and is watching over me.
I spent today planting a "memory garden" in honor of Ed and will be happy to share the pictures when they get developed.

- "WOULD YOU LIKE CREAM OR SUGAR?" -- SASSY, 12:52:48 06/04/02 Tue
That's the question I should've asked Ed when I was visiting in March. He was awake quite early the first morning I was there. I asked if I could get him anything and he said he'd enjoy some coffee. Being a coffee-drinker myself, I gladly made a pot for us to share.
However, after a time I asked if I could warm his cup up a wee bit. He said yes and quietly added....."could you put a little milk and sugar in it, too?" I used to need milk and sugar in my coffee too so I could appreciate how bad black coffee must've tasted to him. I told him he should have said "hey! you forgot milk and sugar", but he said he didn't want me to have to go back out to the kitchen to add it. What a sweetie. I assured him I was there to do for him whatever I could, so he shouldn't think twice about asking me to get him anything he needed.
So - during the rest of my stay there, when I would get him some coffee or tea I would automatically say, "two sugars and some milk?". He would laugh and say "yes, please".
He was thoughtful about EVERYTHING and never wanted to take advantage of anyone's help. I think he realized that I WANTED to do for him whatever I could -- that it was my pleasure.

- An Ed Story -- Rick, 20:47:04 06/02/02 Sun
.
.
One afternoon last summer I was driving a No. 10 Kootenay Loop bus through the busy intersection at Main and Hastings. This is an intersection where the people cross against the lights, doesn't matter if it's red, green or orange, they just go.
I coincidentally happened to be sitting at a red light with a full bus load, and who should drive by in front of me but Ed, on his scooter.
When I spotted Ed I yelled out my window "Hey, buddy, get that scooter out of my way!" I heard a gasp or two from my passengers, everyone else was silent and looking at me aghast. I was looking at Ed, waiting for some kind of acknowledgement. He didn't say anyhting and I was thinking "Oh, great, I'm going to get letters and everyone is looking at me like a mean bastard, talking to a guy in a scooter that way."
I was sweating bullets cause I looked like a real bastard.
Finally, Ed smiled and said "Hi, Rick", and waved, and I kind of breathed a sigh of relief.
The next time the local Vancouver gang met for coffee, we had a real laugh over that one, and Ed admitted to biding his time waiting and letting me sweat.
Ed sure had a sense of humour. Miss you, buddy.
Rick

- A Poem -- Marn, 07:38:16 05/31/02 Fri
I actually wrote this quite a few years back, but came across it recently and thought it fit Ed.
The Challenge Of Life
(Copyright, MLR, not to be reproduced)
From the moment we're born,we start to die
So live life to its fullest ,dont let it pass you by
If it's not a danger to yourself or others then dont be afraid to jump or ask how high
If your bored then your not living ,your heart is slowing down
Jump in the icy waters ,let the world wet you down
Dance between the flames ,let the spark light in your mind
Dont be afraid to get burnt, its how you know your alive
Make the world your canvas and splash the paint all around
Dont paint by numbers, let your hair hang down
Treat others with respect and you shall recieve it in return
Dont be afraid to turn your life lights on
Let the child inside you come out to play
Show your insecurities, thats how they go away
Tears are how your cleanse yourself ,so dont be afraid to let them flow
Touch a strangers life in passing ,for who they are you never know
Allow yourself to be touched ,its the only way to grow
Plant flowers for the butterflies to gather round
Admire the beauty of a weed, arent we all in need of alitle love
And above all, shoot for the moon......
For if you should fall your still among the stars

- Happy Birthday Ed!!!! -- Cherie, 22:15:42 05/30/02 Thu
I'm one of the lucky ones! I got to meet Ed in Surrey 2000 & 2001 and in the summer in between when I was visiting.
Ed was always kind, and would stop to chat with you for a few moments. At Surrey 2001 he received my door prize. I remember telling him that I didn't think he'd have much use for the dragonfly ear rings. He just smiled, leaned over and whispered to me that he knew a beautiful woman he could give them to.
In his own way he has given LOL a whole new meaning. By his kindness he brought us together as a group, a community and as a family. We have lost one of our own, but he has given us so much in return.
Hope you have a Great one Ed!!!!!

- Kindness is never forgotton. -- Casidhe, 21:02:17 05/30/02 Thu
Being a "new" LOL, I was not fortunate to have been able to read all of the kind words left each day from Ed. Birthdays are special days, but Ed has made each day very special to those who looked forward to his posts. Words of kindness, encouragement, and humor were so uplifting to me on days that would have otherwise been very ordinary or sometimes less than enjoyable. My cup is raised to you, Ed, Happy Birthday and thanks for all of the kindness that will never be forgotten. I hope I have learned to follow your example and pass kindness on to others. Hugs to you,Mairghread.

I visited with Ed at Surrey 2000 .I remember when he and Mags walked in the room,I knew who they were. I had never seen as much as a picture, but it was as plain as day.
When we were introduced,he grasped my hand and said,"So this is the farmer..." and we conversed as old friends. He was a gem.
My brother in law passed on the same day as our Ed and May 31 is his wife,Nancy's birthday as well. One more of life's endless coincidences. I like to think of Ed and Dick arriving in their new life together.I'm absolutely sure they will get along famously.

I guess I was one of the lucky ones to have met Ed. Not just in 2000, but also in 2001 at Surrey. Others have stated already what a kind sweet man he was and how he made you feel welcome. He always had a kind word and always said a special phrase (which for the life of me I canna remember right now) when leaving his company. It made you feel special - just as he was special.

- A toast to you, Ed. -- M.F., 10:36:58 05/30/02 Thu
I first met Mags and Ed a few summers ago. My brother lives in west end Vancouver and I called Mags while I was visiting there and we arranged to meet for lunch. She and Ed drove down to a corner on Denman street and since there was nowhere to park they told me to hop in. I did, we found a parking spot and a restaurant and had a nice visit. Ed was so thoughtful (said I was brave for getting into a car with people I had met on the internet). That was the first year I went to Surrey - being an introvert, it was wonderful to be able to sit with people I knew. I've been to Surrey twice now and sat with Ed for part of each visit. Last time we talked about my mom who had recently passed away and Ed was very comforting. He always made me feel like I was a special friend - and I know he did that with everybody he met. I happened to be in Van in February and happened to call the day before the wedding (I had no idea). I feel very privileged to have been invited to witness the marriage of Ed and Mags - and thought it very cool that Ed took Mags last name.
A drink to your birthday, my special friend.

- Ed -- JaniceM, 09:40:10 05/30/02 Thu
Ed.......hell of a guy, IMO. Even he did persist in cheering on that OTHER team *g*, Ed was always in good spirits and full of joy.
I remember having several all too brief conversations with him; he was interested in all sorts of things. He could chat about the books, things to see in BC, the geo-political cuture of the C21 and all things bright and beautiful. I could tell he would get uncomfortable but he never gave into his ailments, he's just say...."I gotta sit down now." and carry on.
I will miss him in Surrey this October. I was with Charyl and drm when they told me of his passing and we raised a glass to his memory. A spider came to visit us in the booth...was it Ed? Not yet a bat? Like to think he paused and touched us yet again.
He was so overwhelmed by the quilt the Lallyquilters made him and so humble about the "shower" we orchestered for the newlyweds. Ed, did you ever believe us when we said we loved you? I hope so, 'cause it was true.
This year I vote we dedicate Thursday night in Surrey to Ed! Hugs to his family. Janice

He seemed to genuinely enjoy each and every one of us, as much as we enjoyed him - and his lovely wife Mags.

That was ages ago, I really liked your way of writing, your way of thinking about different issues, I liked what I read in your Hammie interview. There's lot of things we shared the way of thinking. I wish I had a chance to meet you. But I will, one day! Ti voglio bene!

- I'm just going to write what I just kinda put in a card for Mags because it's how I remember Ed. :-) -- M&M, 07:37:19 05/30/02 Thu
My fondest memory of Ed was last year at Surrey....
I have no idea who had the idea of bringing this red sticky rubber weenis (like those kids wallwalkers), but someone did and soon it was flying across this banquet room. I didn't want to touch it....it was kinda gross all covered with lallylint. *g* Anyway....Ellie, Aislinn, Scotty and I were parking our arses at this table for quite awhile and posing for pictures. Many of you still owe us a dollar!
Anyway.....Ed was sitting at the back side of the table then I heard him in this grumbled voice say something(I have no idea what) and then a big WHAM! This flying weenis went right over his head and hit the partition wall. He grumbled something else, picked it up and then just kinda smiled.
I thought.....what a guy! To put up with all these women who think sending a lallylint filled red rubber weenis flying is so much fun!
Mr. Ed.....you are missed!!!!!

I had an interesting experience in Vermont this past weekend. I like to think that it was Ed paying me a visit. :-)
I was all ready for bed and what flies into my room? A bat.
We played dodgem for a while and then called it quits for the night. The next morning the bat was taken off the wall and let loose outside. I grabbed the digital camera and took a pic. :-)
Hey Ed, next time you visit, can we stay outdoors? ;-)

See ya later, Ed! I'll leave the light off for ya. :-)

We sure miss you ED but I know that you're lighting up the other side with your humor and charm
much as you did LOL. Don't forget to put in a good word with the "Big Guy" for all of us :+).

- Hello Ed. -- Lady Leven, 02:40:56 05/30/02 Thu
Like me, a fellow gemini, therefore easy to laugh and smile, with a great sense of humor! I never met you Ed, but knew you well through the boards and feel humbled by your love for Mairghread and kindness to all. I hope to meet you one day and share a joke or two!

- Happy Birthday Ed -- JackieR, 23:12:37 05/29/02 Wed
Ed's kindness quotes really touched my heart. Knowing that Ed was so sick but he still thought of us each day... well he was a lovely kind man.
If everyone did their next act of kindness in memory of Ed, I can just imagine that his heart would burst with pride - watching knowing that one act of kindness often leads to another and another and another. What a world we could create.
Happy Birthday to a Kind hoser. One of the best.

- Thinking of you, Ed -- Judie, 22:54:06 05/29/02 Wed
.
.
Ed was one of the Vancouver hosers who have been meeting for the past few years at Starbucks for a chat and a coffee. It was always a pleasure to be around Ed, he just seemed like such a gentle man. He always seemed so happy to see everyone. He kept you entertained with stories all the time.
Actually, it was weird that Ed died at 1 a.m. on May 16th, which was my birthday. Kind of cosmic - karma?
That night I happened to be online with Eva from about midnight to 4 a.m. (me in Vancouver, her in Italy, where it was early morning) because she had sent me 3 binders full of messages from the LOL gang for my birthday.
The message for May 31st was from Ed. I'm looking at it now. It was the only one that made me cry. It just seems so "ED" to me.
One thing I didn't know until today when Mairghread told me, was that Ed was a painter and a poet. Figures I wouldn't know that - I never heard him blow his own horn once!
You can see it HERE. Thanks, Ed. Love ya!
Judie
