That is actually one hell of an intelligent point. Add to that also that both men regularly refused to do clean jobs, yet somehow avoided the net criticism that Michaels, Undertaker and Triple H have received. Bret dropped the IC belt on a house whoe claiming illness, as he wouldnt put The Mountie over properly. He did eventually drop it again to Bulldog in the UK, but couldnt really refuse that. Then he never dropped the world title clean, in an era when people usually did. Salt in the face v Yokozuna, a double cross towel thrown in v Backlund, an overtime loss to Michaels so he could claim he was screwed (finish was all Bret's idea), Austin interference v Sid, and of course the famous Montreal match, where Bret was leaving the company, and destroyed the traditions of ther business by refusing to drop the belt on his last night in. The ECW fans would have murdered him for that.
Austin meanwhile wouldnt drop the IC belt to Rock, and famously refused to put TripleH over (he dropped it to Foley in a 3 way, then Hunter pinned Foley the next night if you remember). His other title losses came in siuations such as first blood matches, and double pin screwjobs. Not much in the way of clean pins there.
Also, both men were hideously buried for so long, Bret in WWF, and Austin in WCW.
What we need now is for Austin to develop a major enemy backstage to fill the Shawn Michaels role (Hall?).
Where this will all lead is still a mystery. Austin has apparently forced a whole bunch of changes to match endings and storylines recently, but is still not happy. And you have to remember the way Vince's mind works. What are the odds of this. Vince does a Montreal screwjob on Austin sometime, leading Austin to "quit". Then Austin comes back months later for a huge PPV buyrate, and a huge feud with McMahon. Either way, I wouldnt be surprised if the WWF gave Austin some time off to cool down. Then, when he comes back, they can cash in with a big increase in revenue on a PPV show. There are enough stars to carry things in the meantime.
