Director Steve McQueen Defends '12 Years A Slave' : 'It's Not About Sugarcoating'

The violent movie saw walk-outs during it's debut at Toronto Film Festival

Director Steve Mcqueen has defended '12 Years A Slave' after the violent documentation of the American slave-trade, saw a handful of walk-outs during its debut at the Toronto film festival last week, despite rave reviews by critics.

The BAFTA winning director claims the biopic- based on the true events of Solomon Northup, a free black man who was kidnapped and sold into slavery - doesn't seek to "sugarcoat" history for those who may find its brutality unpalatable.

He argued: "From the response in Toronto, people want [this realism]. Everyone's an adult here; they know how to deal with it. It's not about sort of sugarcoating it. We're here to do something that we feel is necessary."

The cast of the star-studded film - which is tipped for an Oscar next year - also praised the director for his honest depiction of the brutality of slave-trade.

Michael Fassbender - who stars alongside Brad Pitt in the biopic - echoed the director's comments claiming that it's better to to tell history exactly as it happened.

He explained: "It's easy. We were just there to facilitate. What's tricky is when people try to sugarcoat it or start messing with it. It is what it is."

Chiwetel Ejiofor - who leads as Simon Northup - added: "To not show it as explicitly as we can would I think be a disservice to [Northup] and his family. What's the point in telling the story if we couldn't tell the story?"

Based on Simon Northup's real life memoir, director Steve McQueen likens the book to The Diaries of Anne Frank which was written a century later, and claims raising awareness of the "remarkable" story spurred his motivation to bring the book to the big screen.

He recalled: "I was upset with myself that I didn't know this book and then I realized no one I knew knew about it. No one. As soon as [my wife] put it in my hand I didn't let it go, it was just remarkable. I had an idea and then you see it in your hand as a book. Amazing."

" Everyone's an adult here; they know how to deal with it. It's not about sort of sugarcoating it. We're here to do something that we feel is necessary."

I had to respond. What is the necessity? Fueling a racial war? Adding fuel to the already burning fire?

Makes me shake my head, are they really that clueless? Doesn't seem possible but it appears they are.

I just don't get it. It is so obvious to me.
