Author: Kaydn
Subject: Lesson 1 - manipulating objects

As almost all the students had arrived Kaydn decided to start the class. She began by emptying a bag full of an assortment of objects, including pens, balls and pots. She turned to the class.

"My name is Kaydn Gedarre and I'll be your teacher for this class. Air is possibly used more than anything else in channelling. It can be used for many things, even as a weapon, and it is an important part in many complex weaves.
Most women are relatively strong in it, although I know that a couple of you are not," she added with a smile. "But that hopefully won't be a problem as there are alternatives you can use to some of the weaves I'll be demonstrating. As one of my teachers once said, you can make up for a lack of brute strength through skill and practice.

"The weave we'll be covering today is one of the most basic, manipulating objects with air. It's a good way to familiarise yourself with air and the basic concept will be useful later on. Now, watch and listen," Kaydn embraced saidar and demonstrated the weave while explaining it.

"It's best to begin with a small object and work your way up." She had selected a brightly coloured juggling ball.
"The basic idea is to gain control of the air around the object, so surround it with a weave of air. You want to compress the air, so it becomes solid. That way you can move the object around by moving the air." She made the ball rise off her desk and let it hover in front of her.

"There are a couple of important points to remember. If you are moving something living, then make certain you don't impede their breathing. Also, don't make the weave to tight or you may damage the object." She let the ball gently come to rest on her desk.

"You can select something from the pile on the floor and try the weave yourself. Are there any questions?"
